Guide to buying a towel

Buying a towel is a lot more complicated than it used to be, so to help you through the choices, we have put together a brief guide. There are essentially two main factors you need to think about when purchasing your perfect towel.  These are the type of fibre, which affects absorbency,  and the towel weight/density, expressed as the GSM count or grams per square metre.

Step 1 Choosing your fibre
Bath towels are generally made from one of three types of cotton: Egyptian, Supima and standard, all of which are priced differently. All our towels are 100% combed cotton. Cotton fibres are naturally absorbent, and can hold almost 25 times their weight in water. Combed cotton ensures that the shorter threads have been removed, keeping the towel strong and preventing pilling.
Egyptian cotton produces the longest threads and is the softest and most absorbent.
Supima cotton is grown in the United States, and while it produces shorter threads than Egyptian cotton, it is slightly more durable.
Standard cotton is of a lesser quality than the others, but it is nevertheless absorbent and lasts a long while.

Step 2 – Choosing your towel thickness
The towel weight is given in GSM units and is a measure of the density of the material. The higher GSM ratings represent the densest, most plush towel. Good quality towels are around the 500- 600 GSM mark. A towel that weighs less than 400GSM is likely to feel rather insubstantial.  Our Christy towel is top of the line at 700 GSM: this is what you would get in a good quality spa.
For general bathroom use, a 600 GSM towel is perfect. However, if it's for your child's swimming bag then a lightweight towel may be an advantage. You should select your towel according to your intended use.

Step 3 – Choosing your towel size
Our extensive range of towels comes in sizes to suit various purposes:
Face towels - approximately 12.9”x 12.9” (33 x 33cm)
.Hand towels - approximately 15.7”x 27.5” (40cm x 70cm)
Guest towels -  approximately 19.6”x 39.3” (50cm x 100cm)
 Bath towels - approximately 66.1” x 51.2” (68cm x 130cm)
Bath sheets are the largest and most indulgent in our range, and measure approximately 39.3” x 64.9” (100cm x 165cm)
Finally, our Bath rug  measures19.6” x 31.4” (50cm x 80cm), and is an essential addition to any bathroom.

Summary
A towel should be bought with the intended purpose in mind – thicker towels for bathroom use and thinner towels for children or for travelling. The two things to remember are that cotton is a must as it provides the most absorbency, and that the GSM rating will give you an indication of how thick and luxurious the towel is. Of course we understand that colour will be a huge factor in your choice so we have selected a range of colours which combines with every bathroom palette. 

How to care for your new towel

We recommend that your new towel purchase should be washed before use.Please always follow the washing instructions placed on the label of the towel.

If you see a stray pulled loop on your towel please cut off with a pair of scissors, this will not damage the towel. Do not pull the loop to see what happens.

We suggest using detergent specifically for coloured towels and to avoid brightening detergents, this will affect the towel colour. Bathroom detergents and some beauty products such as cleansers contain bleaching agents and may cause permanent discolouration to your towel.
Fabric conditioner will reduce the absorbency of the towel, as this coats the yarn making it less efficient. We advise against dry cleaning your towels
