  • Guide to Buying a Tablecloth

A well chosen tablecloth can add personality to a room and can influence the atmosphere when dining. Pure white linen tablecloths which are used in quality restaurants and hotels can be used to create a formal atmosphere at dinner parties or special celebrations. On the other hand Gingham and Seersucker tablecloths can be used to create an informal and fun environment for family and friends.

We stock the best of these options; Irish Linen Damask for those special occasions and fun, lively cotton tablecloths for everyday use or informal get-togethers.

Step 1 What is the purpose of your tablecloth?

Start by thinking of the purpose of the tablecloth. If it is for a dinner party, as discussed you may want an Irish Linen Damask or a 100% Cotton cloth in White or Cream. So what is Irish Linen Damask, Damask is a reversible figured fabric of, linen, cotton, or, with a pattern formed by weaving. The pattern is usually visible in the same colour fabric. The fabric has a supersoft feel and will tend to be heavy in weight.

We stock Liddel Cotton and Ferguson Irish Linen tablecloths; these are traditional ‘Houses’ in Ireland that have been manufacturing these exclusive tablecloths for generations.

Alternatively, we also carry the Charlotte Tablecloth by Peggy Wilkins. This tablecloth is a polycotton fabric available in White and Cream and is suited for formal dining and when the cloth needs to be used time and time again.

If you’re looking for more colourful alternatives you could try the Auberge range or the Seersucker range. Both are 100% Cotton and are extremely versatile. The Auberge range is a beautifully soft Gingham cloth which is prefect both inside and outside. We find that this cloth is extremely durable due the quality of the weaving process. The great thing about the Auberge range is that matching napkins are available making this line great for more informal dining especially around BBQ season.

Our Peggy Wilkins Seersucker is also great for informal gatherings. A Seersucker tablecloth Seersucker is a thin, all-cotton fabric, commonly striped or checkered, used to make clothing for spring and summer wear. Seersucker is woven in such a way that some threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled appearance in places. It also means that ironing is not necessary – Yay.

Step 2 – Don’t forget your Table Protector

A Good quality tablecloth will only protect your table so much. To make doubly sure that your table isn’t damaged from hot items we advise a table protector. These are inexpensive compared to the cost of removing stains from a table. It’s best to get a larger table protector and cut it down to size.

Well, so choosing your ideal table cloth should be down to the occasion and how many times you want to use the cloth. If you going to use it every day for each meal and wash it frequently an Irish Linens Damask is probably not the best option. Whereas it would be perfect for a special occasion or a gift.
